Worried about spine surgery? Every patient's situation is different
I often hear two very different concerns in clinic:
"My neighbor couldn't walk after spine surgery. I'm afraid to have an operation."
"My friend went home the same day. Could I do that too?"
Someone else's outcome cannot tell us what will happen in your case.
Spine surgery includes many different procedures for very different conditions.
A herniated disc may need a limited decompression procedure. Spondylolisthesis or instability may require screws and fusion. In selected patients with an osteoporotic compression fracture, vertebroplasty may be an option. This minimally invasive procedure uses bone cement and can be performed under local anesthesia to help relieve pain and restore mobility.
Severe spinal deformity, infection, or a spinal tumor may require more extensive and complex reconstruction.
When someone says that a neighbor could not walk after surgery, we usually do not know the full medical history. We may not know the person's nerve function or overall health before the operation, or whether the condition was a common degenerative problem, a tumor, an infection, or a complex deformity.
Likewise, a friend going home on the day of surgery does not mean that your situation is the same. The diagnosis, degree of nerve compression, overall health, and procedure may all be different.
My focus during your visit is your situation: your symptoms, their effect on daily life, and any changes in nerve function found on examination. I consider those findings alongside X-rays, MRI scans, and other relevant information to identify the problem and discuss appropriate treatment.
Some patients need monitoring, rehabilitation, or medication. Others may benefit from an injection. Some need surgery.
Even when two procedures are both called spine surgery, their extent, risks, and recovery times may differ greatly.
Other people's experiences can be helpful to hear, but they should not be assumed to predict your own. Our discussion needs to focus on your spine and your needs.
